Best Brownie Recipes

This is a recipe for brownies. First you need to bake an angel cake or a Sunshine Cake (see instructions below). Then pull the cake apart with a fork in irregular pieces about 2 inches square; take each piece on a fork and dip in hot Chocolate Icing (see below) and let cool on a platter. The result is unbelievably delicious brownies.

One of the things that I like about these recipes is that they are relatively simple and use few ingredients.

Angel Cake
You will need to bake either an angel cake or a sunshine cake as the base for this brownie recipe. This is the recipe for the angel cake:

Angel Cake for Brownies

  • 6 eggs
  • A pinch of salt added to the eggs before beating
  • 1/3 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 2/3 cup flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 lemon, or
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Sift, measure and set aside flour and sugar; then sift flour four times; separate the eggs; beat yolks to a very stiff froth; whip whites to foam, add cream of tartar, and whip until very stiff-add sugar to the yolks and beat; then add the beaten whites, gradually, and flavoring, then fold in flour lightly. Put in moderate oven at once, in ungreased pan; will bake in thirty to forty-five minutes. Invert to cool.

In the alternative you can make a Sunshine Cake as the base for your brownies. This is a recipe for a sunshine cake:

Sunshine Cake for Brownies

  • 6 eggs,
  • A pinch of salt added to the eggs before beating,
  • 1/3 teaspoon cream of tartar,
  • 2/3 cup flour,
  • 1 cup sugar,
  • 1/2 lemon, or
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla.
  • Sift, measure and set aside flour and sugar; then sift flour four times; separate the eggs; beat yolks to a very stiff froth; whip whites to foam, add cream of tartar, and whip until very stiff-add sugar to the yolks and beat; then add the beaten whites, gradually, and flavoring, then fold in flour lightly. Put in moderate oven at once, in ungreased pan; will bake in thirty to forty-five minutes. Invert to cool.

After you have made the angel cake, you need break the pieces of the cake up into irregular chunks and then dip them into hot chocolate icing.

Hot Chocolate Icing

This is the recipe for hot chocolate icing:

Chocolate Icing for Brownies

  • 1 1/2 cup confectioner's sugar,
  • 1 oz. chocolate, shaved, or cocoa,
  • About 6 tablespoons boiling
  • water,
  • 1/3 teaspoon vanilla extract.

Melt chocolate over hot water, add boiling water and stir until smooth; add vanilla and stir in the sifted sugar, adding more hot water, if needed, to spread the mixture smoothly. If cocoa is used melt in the boiling water. A little cinnamon may be added.

Dip the pieces of the sunshine or angel cakes in the chocolate icing and the result is a delicious brownie. Yum!
